Speaking ahead of the Scottish Conservative conference in Aberdeen, Scottish Liberal Democrat lead MEP candidate and Aberdeenshire resident Sheila Ritchie said:

"Ruth Davidson returns to the political frontline with all her hard work burning down around her. Her party faces a serious drubbing at both the local and European elections.

"The Scottish Conservatives are deeply divided over Brexit. Their MPs promised to stand up for Scotland but most of them have been in the PM's pocket since day one and those that haven't want an even more disastrous hard Brexit.

"Ruth Davidson was once a committed Remainer, perhaps she can summon some of that spirit and do what her constituents want by backing a People's Vote and an exit from Brexit."
