Peter Barrett

Peter is a hardworking local councillor for Perth City who champions the causes of care for the elderly, action on homelessness and affordable housing as Convenor of Housing and Health. He keeps in touch with local residents through regular Focus newsletters, emails,

Peter Barrett's Facebook

and Peter Barrett's website.

Peter lives in Perth, with his wife Liz, who runs her own business. They have two teenage sons, one studying at university and the other at college.

Since his election to the Council in 2003, where Peter won his seat from third place, beating the Conservatives and leapfrogging the SNP, Peter was convincingly re-elected as the Lib Dem Councillor for Perth City Centre in 2007.

Peter has fought numerous high profile campaigns with the active support of Perth residents to preserve and enhance the stature of the city:

  • He championed Perth's successful bid to achieve Fairtrade status
  • Fought successfully to preserve the amenity of Tay Street
  • In the vanguard of the "Stop the Incinerator" campaign against the Shore Road waste to energy plant.

Peter has a passion for the Fair City of Perth and for Perthshire and will work hard to improve the quality of life for all. He has been a regular shopper at the Farmers' Market since it started, is a Friend of Perth Festival of the Arts, a Horsecross Regular and a member of Perth Burns Club, and a familiar figure at local events.

Peter fought the Perth constituency at the Scottish Parliament election in 2007 moving one place closer to winning and increasing the Lib Dem share of the vote, and fought the Perth and North Perthshire constituency at the Westminster election in 2010. Peter also stood as a Scottish Parliament list candidate for our area in 2007 and in 2003.

Peter is an experienced and effective campaigner, a former National Campaigns Manager with the Scottish Liberal Democrats and a winner again as Agent in Willie Rennie MP's by-election triumph in Dunfermline.

Before working in politics Peter was a manager with a national builder's merchant working in Edinburgh, London, Dundee and the Borders.

Peter is an elder at St. Matthew's Church on Tay Street, where he edits the monthly magazine and founded the Men's Group. His hobbies include hill-walking, crosswords, sailing and cycling, and can often be seen on his bike between home and Council duties.
